The bullpen's been in a bad spot since probably the end of June.
People in Detroit love to talk about the trade deadline.
Scott Harris is getting killed for the trade deadline.
He added Kyle Finnegan, who's been good.
He added Rafael Montero, who's been all right.
but they didn't really get that big-time swing or miss closer.
In the rotation, they traded for Charlie Morton and Chris Paddock.
Both were disasters.
Morton's been DFA'd.
Paddock just as easily could have been DFA'd.
So their pitching moves weren't enough to actually fortify this staff.
They had some other misses along the way.
Alex Cobb and John Brebbia, who they signed in free agency or among those players,
I think it was some poor roster construction, some poor roster management in smaller doses throughout the year.
And I still don't think that quite explains how the collapse has become this bad because there are still some good players on this team.
This is still the core that staged a historic run to the playoffs last year.
Now the cracks have started to show.
The breaks aren't going in their favor.
And this has turned into a really, really bad situation.
