One thing that really comes into focus when you talk about Verlander and Scherzer as well is the fact that pitchers just don't come up doing things quite the same way anymore, specifically in terms of innings, in terms of workload.
I think Justin Verlander has thrown, I believe, 26 career-complete games.
Tarek Scouble has two Cy Young awards.
He has thrown one complete game in his career.
You know, there was a while where Berlander was throwing 230, 240, 250 innings, seemingly year in and year out.
And I think Sandy Alcantara is the only person since,
2019 to surpass 223 innings.
The game has obviously just changed.
You're throwing max effort every single pitch.
Teams are more likely to turn things over to the bullpen, to have other guys come in one inning, throw max effort.
So there's certainly a respect among players like Tarek Skubal and Hunter Brown and
You know, even others of maybe lesser stature in the game for what Justin Verlander did and also how he did it.
I think even though the game is played and managed differently, starting pitchers still like to think of themselves as workhorses.
They still really value kind of this mystique of innings, but they recognize they're not doing this the same way that guys like Verlander, Scherzer, Clayton Kershaw did it.
And it does create the interesting question, is this ever going to change?
Is this ever going to go back?
Will we ever see a pitcher win, forget about 300, about 250 games again?
I don't know.
And that is one thing that I think makes the significance of the Verlander retirement so interesting.
