Elsewhere around baseball, the Braves lost, so the Jays gained half a game in the division. Whoop-de-doo, Basil. They're now 11 games behind. They remain two and a half games back of the wild card. They've got one series left before the All-Star break. They will take on the Padres beginning tonight. It's a 9-40 game tonight, an 8-40 game on Saturday, and a 4-10 game on Sunday. Pretty big series. The Blue Jays, on paper, have the pitching advantage in at least two of those games, and then it's the All-Star break. The Jays would surely love to win another series, inch a little closer to 500.
We are only a couple weeks out from the trade deadline, and as we've talked about, and we'll talk about a bunch more today. The Blue Jays need to make the case that this is a group worth investing further in heavily and not just holding Pat or if things go really awry the next couple weeks, selling. Out of the All-Star break, they will have a seven-game homestand with three against the White Sox and four against Tampa Bay. So two teams who are ahead of them in the standings right now. In the Rays' case, the best record in the American League by a good margin. In the White Sox case, fighting for the American League Central. And if not the American League Central, then a wild card spot. There was not a lot going on on the farm yesterday as far as rehab and things like that go.
Because this is the first game of a series, I'd imagine there will be some updates from John Schneider before the game tonight. those reporters who are on the road in San Diego. I would also anticipate next Friday being a pretty big news dump day coming out of the All-Star break and things like that. We have shows next week, by the way, despite the Blue Jays not playing. We'll talk some, I guess, home run derby and All-Star game. We'll talk a lot of the draft. The Major League Baseball entry draft is this weekend, the 11th and 12th. Shai Davidi will be there for Sportsnet. You can look to sports at.ca for more on that. The futures game is this weekend. The all-star game is Monday or the all-star game is Tuesday.

Verlander was a guy that he would watch on YouTube, and when he got the chance to Duke America and he was called up when the Jays were in America, that was... A special thing for him there. There's also obviously a connection between Verlander and Scherzer. They were on some of those Tigers teams together. They will probably be the last two pitchers to reach 3,500 strikeouts. Justin Verlander is going to come up short of 4,000, come up short of 300 wins. Those markers might be done for the time being. we will also talk to you during the show.
