As promised, Mike visits Maddie and Kyra.
As he reads to Kyra, she describes the dream that he had had the previous night in which Kyra had been taken away.
Later, Mike and Maddie discuss what Mike had learned, and Maddie realizes that Joe never told Mike about the baby because she knew about the curse from Sarah Tidwell.
As they start to explore their feelings, a shot rings out and Maddie's brains are blown out.
It's gruesome.
It's sad.
And now for the second time, Mike cradles a dying woman in his arms.
Mike rushes out to confront the shooter, the deputy.
He beats him with a meat tenderizer and drives Kyra away from the murder scene.
Villainous locals chase after him as Mike takes her back to the cabin.
There's a car chase, and the locals explode in a car crash fireball.
As Sarah laughs, Mike realizes that Joe has been able to communicate to him through his writing about Sarah without Sarah knowing about it, and the lie-still bag of bones is actually a command to spread lie over Sarah's bag of bones.
He digs up the bones of Sarah and her daughter, and then he's attacked by the tree lady.
