So the reality is that traditional marking feels incredibly objective, but it is actually incredibly subjective and is riddled w with kind of disagreements and inconsistencies.
Comparative judgment is the other way around.
It feels really subjective.
Right.
It just feels like I'm looking at two pieces and I'm just going on my gut instinct, how can this be right?
But the reality is that markers who use it have incredible levels of agreement with other markers and themselves.
Right.
So, you know, we get with human to human agreement, we will get human to humans agreeing eighty to eighty five percent of the time.
Right, we will get um if they come back and mark over time, you know, the diff to again again, very high levels of internal consistency.
So that is the weird thing about comparative judgment that
that that tacit knowledge, when you're judging on that tacit knowledge, there does seem to be and the other weird thing is we do assessments in different countries, different jurisdictions, um, Australia, America, New Zealand, different American states.
People in all those different jurisdictions who have been taught about how good what good writing is in different ways and have different rubrics, like again, remarkably on the demo tasks we run, they agree.
So when you say to me like what is good writing, like you know, you know, what are people sort of judging on, there does seem to be this tacit understanding of what makes good writing that is consistent.
Across kind of different phases, different jurisdictions.
My feeling is, having looked at a lot of these pieces, that people, whether they're told to or not,
There is something underpinning all different genres and styles of writing.
There is something to do with the command of sentence structure.
But does just matter.
and and that people value and that I think that sits underneath.
the kind of jurisdiction specific rubrics that get produced.
