I think that's something we all value.
So it's interesting where you said that about the height example, because you said, you know, um, how do I grow taller?
Well, actually the point I'd make there is the how do I grow taller answer is almost separate from either absolute or comparative judgment.
Like however you measure someone, this is the my central point about summative informative.
So whether you're measuring somebody using comparative judgment or f absolute judgment,
it doesn't actually help you answer the question of how I grow taller.
The question of how I grow taller is like a completely different thing about nutrition, right?
And food.
And I'd say almost that was the argument I made in my book Making Good Progress, that actually the method by which you summatively assess is not always optimised for telling you how you get better.
Um and what I would say is the how you get better question
The the the summative assessment helps it.
And it's in engage with it because it's kind of telling you if somebody is kind of getting better.
Um but I think you need to do kind of separate analyses.
of the writing and of your techniques for improving it to see which works.
And so that's what I'd say
We've done some follow ups where we do a lot of work on multiple choice questions and we follow up with multiple choice questions about sentence structure.
And what we found is there is a pretty good correlation between what you would think are some quite basic, simple questions about sentence structure, that the students who get those right, there's a pretty good correlation between that and the students who are better writers.
So the students who understand um
that kind of the difference between a short sentence, a simple sentence and a run on sentence tend to be better writers, tend to get better scores on our writing assessments.
So we definitely think there is something to do with sentence structure.
