Like I said, it's about the principle and the context of the request that's being made.

Some of the studies I looked at from both PayPal and Cash App showed that people are okay with getting requests soon after the exchange or payment or moment happens.

So if you send the request at the dinner table or just after, people tend to be fine with that.

If you send it late, longer than a week, issues start to arise.

When it comes to dollar amounts, people tend to be okay with things that cost more than $5 or, again, things that you had a conversation about.

When they hit $5 or below, they say you just kind of look cheap and they question your motivations.

On some platforms, they do expire.

For example, PayPal requests expire after 60 days, whereas Venmo doesn't have an expiration date.

So someone can send you a Venmo request today, and in two years, that request could still be there on the app.

And sometimes that can lead to lingering reminders of unpaid debts.

Clear communication is key.

I spoke to some etiquette experts who say that before making any group payments or even before going in together on something that may cost a lot of money, it's important to discuss how the bill will be split and assure that everyone agrees.

Sending a payment request promptly after the event can also help avoid misunderstandings and some resentment.

So what happened with some of the people I spoke with was they looked at the bill and they say, hey, I got this, this and this.

Here's my total.

And then they send their total.

There's instances where the person who paid the bill feels like they should pay more.

You know, maybe in one specific instance, the person who paid the bill ordered shots for everybody and she expected everyone to pitch in and help pay for those shots.

But some of the guests didn't necessarily see it that way.

So they didn't send enough money to cover the drinks.
