And what is happening now is it doesn't just affect the immigrant communities.

It affects everybody because this administration is using fascist tactics like stopping people and asking for their papers.

Well, we have, even in the minority, I'm on the Homeland Security Committee and Judiciary Committee, and those are the two committees of jurisdiction over immigration.

So I'm immersed in this when I'm down in Washington, when I'm back here.

And we're going to have to take a...

360-degree approach to this, which is what I've been trying to do for the last year.

So I've introduced legislation to unmask ICE, to prohibit ICE from arresting immigrants who are going to court for required appearances for their case and are being arrested there, to eliminate qualified immunity for ICE officers, to create an independent immigration court outside the thumb and the authority of Donald Trump.

But we also have to look for other creative ways.

And I filed a lawsuit.

I led a lawsuit that 11 of my colleagues brought with me to force ICE to allow us to do oversight.

And we wanted, and now I'm able to do oversight of the ICE detention facility here at 26 Federal Plaza, which had previously been under horrific conditions.

And even just this morning, before I met with you, I went to the Metropolitan Detention Center, the criminal jail,

that where today there are about 162 immigration detainees are staying indefinitely in a criminal jail under the same rules as criminal defendants.

And so I was able to go in there.

I saw what was going on.

I learned, I met with some of the folks who are staying there.

One guy, 25 years here,

Filed asylum claim, it was denied, but he got a work authorization, has no papers.

The consulate is not giving him a passport to go back into his home.

So he's been on supervision, checking in as required every year, paying taxes, owned a business, owned a house, has two American kids, has been doing everything that he was supposed to do, no arrests, no convictions, nothing.
