And he's picked up and he's sitting in a criminal jail.
Criminal jail under the same food, the same policies and procedures, the same counts, lockdowns.
They're in their cell for 14 hours a day, minimum.
And that's just, that's absolutely absurd.
But I've been able to go in there and see it and I can now talk to you about it and I can amplify these conditions that are
absolutely just unacceptable for people who are under civil enforcement.
And then the last thing that we have to focus on is helping the individuals.
And I've been built a triage center out of my office across the street from 26 Federal Plaza, where we bring in
families of immigrants who've been detained, mostly at 26 Federal Plaza.
And we're working with advocacy groups and activists and court watchers and legal groups to give them full wraparound services.
And we've been able to file immediate habeas petitions.
And we've gotten 35 out of immigration detention, which is really, really meaningful and rewarding.
But it also then brings up, well, there are tens, if not hundreds of thousands of others
who are not getting out.
If someone who's detained fills out a waiver, a privacy waiver form with ICE, I am permitted to speak to them.
But now what they do is they require that we provide that release and the desire to speak to that person 48 hours in advance out of nowhere.
But that means that we I have before when I've gone in there, I have seen somebody who we have a release for from and I've just talked to them right in the detention facility the day that they were arrested.
to understand their case, their situation, get more information so that we can bring it back to our clinic and incorporate all of that information and potentially the legal case.
It is the power of oversight and transparency that is a deterrent.
And that's why Congress's oversight is so important.
