healthcare workers, most of them nurses, do not feel comfortable speaking up when they see a colleague or a physician making an error.

So even when it's not life and death situations, if you're constantly disregarding your values, it can leave you quite drained and

with a lot of tension and resentment.

And it was that kind of tension that actually drove a lot of my work and my research, because I wanted to discover why do some people find it so much easier than I could to speak up when it matters?

And I wanted to get there.

Well, you

grew up in the UK and your parents sent you to Catholic school and you talk about how people wore uniforms and you really tried just not to stand out, to fit in.

I grew up as a military brat.

I went to 10 schools, grades one through 12, moved around all the time and only two of those 10 schools required uniforms so you could dress the way you wanted to and I would go to school

see how people were dressed when I came in as a new kid.

And I would dress very differently just so I would stand out.

It was a way of meeting people.

But then I read a chapter, a subchapter in your book that kind of hit home.

It says the entitlement of a tall white man and which which which I think was an important lesson because I was a very tall white guy and still and still am that there's a disproportionate or asymmetrical risk to speak out.

You say a few words about that.

Sure.

So when we often think about who gets to defy, we tend to ask two questions really about whether this is the right time and the right place to defy.

And what I've found in my research in organisations, that the two questions that we ask

Is it safe for me to defy?

And by safety, it could be physical safety and often is physical safety, financial safety, psychological safety, all different kinds of safety.
