And it really comes down to, again, it's understanding what values are and how they might differ from some of these political positions.
Because yes, these questions are important.
We have ideas and beliefs about them, but that's actually different to how I define values.
Values is how we want to enact our behaviour on a day-to-day basis.
And I have my executive students do this in my leadership classes every single year, is think about what their values are and write them down.
Why is it important to them?
So they're not beliefs that, you know, abortion is wrong or abortion is right, where, you know, there's more than one answer.
Values, when
my students articulate them, they often come down to sort of simple, single words.
They might be simple, but they're actually very powerful words if we can act them.
So they're words such as like integrity.
Integrity is really important to me in how I behave.
So it's about how you want to behave, not a belief or a goal that you have.
So integrity, compassion, kindness, equality, benevolence, justice, these are the things that people come up with and they seem to be almost universal values in a way because I get the same ones year after year after year and the reason I ask them to do this is because the research shows that if you write down your values you're more likely to act in alignment with them
and you have a lower stress response, a lower cortisol level.
So I think it's really important, but there is an additional step because what my research has shown me is that what someone believes their values to be is actually quite different from how they actually behave.
And we want to decrease that gap and get our daily actions representing who we are and what our values are.
So we don't end up saying what I hear many people say, oh, that wasn't me, you know, that's an exception.
We don't want to be saying that.
We want to be able to align our behavior to our values.
