And again, I felt the guilt and shame of that, which is I had more power as a kind of white middle class journalist than the kind of often black or female tenants who'd been shouting from the rooftops for years and were being ignored.

And that power imbalance wasn't great.

to live with daily because I knew what was happening.

And then there's that pull emotion of kind of, I know the kind of, sometimes the relief and sometimes the kind of joy of being able to help people that came with the anger and guilt of why are you listening to me and not listening to them?

And that's what I found really annoying.

I would say, though, there is in between advocacy and maybe campaigning.

Because I think what we found was a system where there was no platform for people to speak out.

Laws have been changed to stop people being heard.

And so I think the role of the press is...

is to give people a voice i think it is to give people a platform what happens after that is up to people in power but i don't think it necessarily is campaigning by kind of giving people a platform to speak but giving them the voice is for me what's absolutely fascinating through the book that happens over and over again because these are the people who've ended up you know we said before silenced

That, I think, became particularly the case when you see a sort of change in housing secretaries.

So the book kind of starts in sort of start of 2021.

At the time, you have Robert Jenrick.

I mean, where'd he end up?

Where's he now?

as House of Secretary and then eventually becomes Michael Gove.

And there's a kind of, I don't know what you thought about that.

I've had some interesting feedback about the Gove chapter because I think I'm probably in this specific area, probably quite kind to him in the book in a way that some people might find irritating.

But the reason why I think I kind of give a bit of credit to him in the book and specifically in this area is because he was sort of the first person in power

a year and a bit into our investigation to acknowledge that you can't deny this anymore.
