So what happened was when we first started, you had a situation where you had a conservative government who didn't want to comment on this because it said, it painted a picture of a decade of conservative power, but they could dodge it by saying, these are social housing, these are councils, this has nothing to do with us.

At the time, a Labour opposition who didn't want to talk about it because they're pro-social housing and the landlords in some of these cases were Labour councils.

So they didn't want to talk about it.

And I had Labour MPs who would come to me and say, it's great work you're doing on all this social housing stuff.

You know, private landlords are a lot worse.

And they try and knock me off course because I was going down a route that was politically uncomfortable.

And you'll see from the book, I don't come to the conclusion that social housing equals bad.

I actually come to the opposite conclusion.

Social housing is very much needed.

But it fell between the cracks.

And so people were trying for the first six months to deny what we were finding.

But like you said, the power of what we were finding was so undeniable.

Irrespective of whose fault it was, you can't leave people living like this.

And in the shadow of Grenfell.

I walk into that block in Croydon in 2021, four years after 72 people had died and which the government said never again.

Well, that was not true.

I saw it again and again and again and again, people living in homes that could kill them.

And then it turns out a little boy died a year later after I first started.

And you have this outpouring again all over the front of the newspapers.

This should never happen again.
