No, it won't.
Why would it be?
72 people died at Grenfell.
We didn't do anything about it then.
The kind of instinctive reaction of the system, of the state, when bad things happen to say, this will be a turning point.
We will never let this happen again.
Only actually happens if you do something about it.
And what we were finding was people weren't doing anything about it.
Why?
Because they didn't care enough to do anything about it.
Maybe it's my naivety that I still haven't quite shared because I talk about in the book about, I kind of went into the whole thing probably unconsciously and then became conscious of it, particularly writing the book, of kind of growing up in a Britain, and this probably is growing up as a kind of straight white guy.
um of like if you do the right thing and if you work hard and if you contact the right people on the whole things will get sorted and as i went through the journey i realized that that wasn't the case there was a kind of another side of the country i lived in that shamed me that made me feel ashamed that you could do all the things you're meant to do and it still wasn't enough and
And I think that, the reason I think I came to the conclusion in the end, not necessarily, I think there are some bad people in the book.
I'll let you work out the ones that I think are.
But the reason why I was conscious of kind of talking about kind of the kind of the apathy and the numbness to the responses that some of our, some of the tenants were receiving.
we're facing is because i know there are thousands of people that work in social housing that with good intentions i've met them and they didn't they don't get up and go to work thinking i don't care i'm gonna make sure these people don't get any kind of access i think what you have to look bigger than that that's easy it's easy to pick out the baddies and go that's bad that's bad but that doesn't speak to a systemic problem you don't have a system where everyone's a bad person it
often the people working in the call centers and people working in housing are as powerless in their own world as the tenants themselves it has to come from the top and it's why the tagline of the book is in a kind of punchy way how governments have betrayed us because government it's government policy it's legislation for 45 years from the top from successive government that has led to the system we're currently living in legislation and culture
But the legislation leads to culture.
