And they had all these junk old files.
And I told them, Look, I think it was a Windows file share.
Or I think it was formerly a Linux box that was running Samba, pretending to be a Windows box, but at this point it had been moved to like I think it was actually living on a Windows server.
And I was like, Look.
You can turn on auditing for that share and you can see in the course of a month or a quarter or a year.
Who touched which files on that server?
It's gonna look kind of brutal maybe, depending on how much disk I.O.
there is and how many people are interacting with this device, at least if you have like the debug logging and the audit logging turned on.
It'll look like it's making the server sweat, but it's temporary, just it's fine.
It's a file server.
It doesn't need to have a shitload of CPU idle.
Run that for like six months and then look at all the files that nobody touched.
Ignore the files that were any file that got touched more than once, ignore it.
If it got touched once or less, look at those files and see how old they are.
And then if nobody has touched them, move them to a different file share and then wait another month and see what happens.
And then if nobody complains that the thing that they're looking for is gone, spin it off to tape or put it on a CD or disk or whatever, put it on cold storage.
And if somebody ever asks for it, you have it.
But it's not taking up terabytes and terabytes of disk space and you don't have to grapple with the liability of having fucking passwords and pictures and resumes and chat logs and bash command history and all that.
Just sitting there for anyone to look at.
