because in this ocean of file share, if you have a single functional Active Directory credential, you can have full read write access to the thing because there's no rhyme or reason why.
You loot a cred or you guess a cred or you fish somebody and you're writing their access in, literally anybody.
You can sit in the lobby of this place and get on their guest Wi Fi and touch that file share.
And if you have valid creds, you can then and I'm like, You guys.
So among the things that we did for them was the actual scanning electron microscopes are hilariously a USB peripheral.
It's like a liquor cabinet size.
But you still just like plug it
Yeah.
There was like a hole in the center of it where they would slide a fully purchased from Dell, a Dell Optiplex desktop workstation.
They'd slide it in and then connect all the cables up in the back.
And they'd sell that as an appliance to various laboratories all over the world and colleges and various government facilities and oh god, like the names of some of these places that I saw on their customer list.
And so when I found that out, I went looking for, well, if they have to maintain Windows.
machines, they have to maintain a gold image, right?
Because they have to flash or they have to install Windows onto this workstation so that it does the thing.
Right.
And then at that point, now you have this scanning electron microscope, which is in the same category as the old Target cache registers from when Target got slammed 10 or 15 years ago that were all running an unpatchable version of embedded Windows XP.
And so if you don't remember the story about that, basically Target got completely slammed in twenty twelve or twenty thirteen or something like that because one of their HVAC vendors w went into a store to do a bunch of work on the AC and the heating and they brought their
Laptops with them.
And that vendor had been infected with some flavor of malware, like active live attackers that had hands-on keyboard on those laptops.
And so when they plugged those work laptops into Target's environment, the people who had control of them, the threat actors who had control of those laptops, went, Oh, fuck a new environment, and started looking around the environment.
