Well, Target's infinite fucking wisdom at the time, the HVAC network was on the same network as their cache rate.
registers because they were treating all of this as they were treating everything as appliances.
So when you look at something on a network, you don't see what it necessarily physically represents in Meat Space, right?
And so the attackers are start scanning this new network that they're on, and what do they see?
A fucking mountain of unpatched Windows XP boxes that are vulnerable to literally everything because they're unpatchable.
So the attackers backdoored every single cache register, realized that they're cache registers, realize that they're in Target's network and went, oh fuck, and then spread to all of Target, every single store.
Oh yeah.
The entire thing globally.
And so it was in the news, it was a gigantic big deal, all sorts of identity theft happened.
Cause what the malware was was it sat in Ram.
And it would read the credit card information as people ran credit cards or bank cards or hacking through the system.
And it would just hoover all that shit out of RAM and ship it up the line to the malware actors who were just collecting literally a fucking Niagara Falls of credit card information out of Target.
And the reason for that was because Target treated their embedded XP cash registers like a V CR.
They treated it like a thing that you can just buy and deploy that you never need to patch.
Need to think about antivirus, blah, blah, blah, blah.
And so in my head, when I find out that there's a fucking Deloptiplex in this scanning electron microscope, the first thing that comes to my head is target and then immediately after that, solar winds, if you remember what happened with solar winds.
I was like, if I put malware on this fucking scanning electron microscope and it goes to some very big well-known atomic regulatory organization in Europe, I have now solar winds people that handle nuclear regulatory stuff.

My pitch to them was if you can find a way to get rid of the Windows box and either make the customer provide their own or find a different platform or something, then you alleviate yourself of the risk of being the next SolarWinds.
