McAfee had been deployed via some Windows based technology, might have been CCM, who knows, to every workstation in the fleet, but never configured.
No AV running on any workstation had a virus definition file.
So functionally it was completely useless.
It did nothing.
McAfee was there and it was running and you could see it in the sys tray, but you could run Meterpreter and Mimi Cats on those boxes all day.
So
In many cases, it's even simpler than that.
So every binary, every file, you can run through something like a SHA-1 hash, SHA-256 hash or something.
So you literally just
Yeah.
And so if you have a file that you've fetched from the internet
And its MD5 hash is a known MD five hash in McAfee's virus definition file.
McAfee will stomp the file and send a report to its mothership saying so and so person just downloaded the Sony wiper malware or wanna cry or pick your poison, whatever.
And so that's one way that that happens.
And that data, the hash of the thing that got ran, is one of the ways that you can discover if something is bad or not, because somebody
Else discovered it and the file has been reported.
And that's how a lot of these gigantic spray and pray type operations work.
Is in almost all circumstances, if you have like you get a piece of spam and I get a piece of spam and we are not connected, we don't work at the same place, why would our two email addresses both be on the same list?
Well, it may have been hoovered up from somewhere, or maybe what's called a combo list where some attacker gets a hold of 4.6 billion.
Email addresses.
