Actually, yeah, a lot of people got fired for buying IBM, but they like using the phrase a lot, so they just don't talk about it.
Yeah, yeah.
And so that's in very large part how the industry works.
And so the concept of shelfware ties into this as well because shelfware is what it sounds like it is.
Back to the McAfee story.
You buy the thing, you put it on the shelf, and you never look at it or think about it again.
But it fulfills its need as a box-checking utility.
You have $300,000 worth of McAfee bullshit on the
Shelf in its shrink wrap.
And when the auditor comes around to see if your Sarbanes Oxley audit is going to pass, you give them your PDF uh sales receipt from McAfee that you spent $300,000 on every single product that McAfee can offer.
And they be the people with the clipboard.
In almost every circumstance, they're either accountants or tax lawyers.
They're not technical people.
They're literally comparing what you have in your corporate policy to what the documentation that you also wrote.
Is.
So not only did you write your homework, you're grading your own homework, and you're giving the homework and the grades to the auditor, and they look at both side by side, go, Oh, yeah, okay, check, check, check, check.
And so the language for the pen test angle in the Sarbanes Oxley regulatory guidelines says you have to get a pen test from a third party, a reputable third party or whatever it is, objective third party once a year.
That's the summation of it.
It doesn't say that you have to do anything with the results.
It doesn't say that you have to turn them into anybody.
