And liminal spaces are ones that are actually ripe with all sorts of potential, but they can be very unstable places.

It can be disorienting.

And I think that right now in our modern world, as things begin to change at paces that maybe we've never seen before, things are always changing.

But I do think that the pace of change is shifting.

And when we are in a constant state of liminality, it can be really challenging.

Now, Turner says that liminality is necessary, that you have to go through the uncomfortable in-between to get to something new.

And here's what I think happens when purpose becomes totalizing.

You get stuck in a permanent version of that in-between.

So purpose, when it's functioning well, it has some edges.

There are moments you step into it.

There are moments you step out to it.

You're a researcher or a leader or a teacher or a coach.

And then you're a person who makes dinner and takes a walk and watches something silly on TV or reads that trashy novel.

And none of those things are necessarily in service of the mission.

And those edges are important.

They're what make purpose feel like a meaningful part of your identity, but not the whole thing.

So when those edges disappear, when purpose becomes totalizing, you lose the ability to just be.

So every moment either needs to contribute to your mission or it feels like a time that you should have been spending on it.

So you're always in the threshold.

You're almost always there.
