And I thought it was so helpful because I'm someone who oftentimes I feel called to things.

And what I might describe as calling, he would probably distinguish as an assignment because

That there are things that we are maybe called to for a moment.

There's a clear beginning and end.

And a lot of times what happens is we confuse an assignment with our calling, which is maybe more ongoing, or our identity, which is who we are.

And I think that teasing out some of these things is really important.

And when it comes to purpose, I've always felt like part of what makes purpose so filled with pressure is that we think that we have one purpose in our life.

And that feels very big.

And so we're either on a search to find out what that is, or maybe we are crushed with the weight of this one purpose.

weighty purpose.

And I've always liked to think about purpose as more of a little p purpose.

This idea that we might have multiple purposes and different seasons might call forth different purposes.

And so I just wanted to share some of my own sort of struggles and thinkings and resistance and drawn ways that I'm both resist the concept of purpose and have also felt incredibly drawn towards it.

So I also want to talk about this through this lens of liminality.

So there's a concept in anthropology and in performance studies, which is what my PhD is in.

It comes from Victor Turner, who was an anthropologist, and he described this middle phase of transition.

So this in-between place.

And if you listened to one of my episodes last week, I have been really fascinated by this concept of chronic liminality.

This is where we kind of get stuck in the messy middle.

It's like we can't get through to the other side, to that place of arrival.
