Now, like all golf courses in Britain and Ireland, until from the 1880s, 90s, until about the 30s, they were rudimentary.

They were often iterated up and up and up.

They were mostly nine holes to start.

And Birkdale was no different at all.

And 1932, Fred Hawtry and J.H.

Taylor of Five Open Championship fame beat out a rival bid with two members to win the contract to redesign the course substantially.

So you can imagine Fred Hawtry, J.H.

Taylor beating out two members.

So it wasn't exactly stiff competition, but it was the order of the day, Andy.

You know, things have got a lot more competitive in life these days in every regard.

But anyway, Fred.

I'd have loved to have seen the plan of the two members.

But anyway, they won, and the course was redesigned.

And then the course was granted open status, or at least the promise of an open in 1940.

But the war intervened, Andy, so that never happened.

But this is where Brookdale has this association with championships.

And it went on to host a Walker Cup in 1951, Curtis Cup in 1948, British amateur won by an Irishman, Jimmy Bruin, in 1946.

but a lot of golf courses in this area are championship golf courses and I really dislike the term because all the courses on the open road are so many courses in America are Hoy Lake down the road hosted the first ever the precursor to the Walker Cup it was the home of the amateur championship and so many other things and Lytham has such a storied history as well but Burtdale

I think it had a short lease on the premises on the various courses that occupied or the two courses that occupied from 1889 onwards.

And I think people thought back then that golf may or may not take off.
