I'm great, and I'm even better now that I'm here with you.
How much longer at the helm?
Literally 10 days.
And?
And I am feeling both relief, gratitude, and a sense of satisfaction.
Well, I can see the finish line, and that gives me a sense of relief and a sense that I can begin to think about what happens next.
The curtain is going down on one of the most important parts of my life, the Ford Foundation.
And the curtain is going to go up.
I don't know what that next act is going to be, but the curtain will be going up very soon.
Well, first, it was a struggle.
It was not easy for the South Africans.
So let's not pretend, and I was in no way making light of their struggle, because it is a struggle when you have an idea, an idea of a multiracial democracy.
That does not exist in many places in the world.
Our own history in this country is one of triumphs and very low moments that I think we all regret.
I think the American story and what I try to capture in my book and what I reflect on in South Africa is the journey which has been both progress and regress and the challenge of reconciling and holding on
to truth that there are things that are great about this country that we should be proud of, that inspire me in our history.
And there are things that I deeply regret.
There are scars on the history of America that we have a very difficult time holding.
So I'm comfortable with the complexity of Thomas Jefferson.
