I don't see him as a mythical god.
I see him as a brilliant man who was deeply flawed also, that he could write.
the words that he wrote in Philadelphia and at Monticello that were so beautiful and so inspirational and that helped birth a nation and at the same time live a life that was antithetical to many of those professed values.
I can hold all of that and think that he is both great and flawed.
Unfortunately for some in America,
It is necessary to hold either of those as the narrative around Thomas Jefferson and therefore the narrative around America because Jefferson is a metaphor in many ways for America.
And we should press forward.
against those who want to make the story of America unidimensional, linear, just fully accretive, and all about America's perfection.
The idea of America is just that.
It was words that formed a construct, a framework around which to build a nation, one unlike any other in history.
But that's what it is and that's what it was and we are manifesting that today and the polarization we're experiencing is not new.
It's not new that we are polarized, that there has been polarization in America throughout our history.
What is new is polarization.
the depth of it, and that we are struggling to get out of it.
And what we desperately need are our leaders, whether they are in government, policy, in the private sector, in civil society, to speak in ways that bring us together.
to help us to see that while we may be different, we are all Americans.
And while we may have a very diverse point of view about all sorts of things, we share a common heritage and aspiration to live together where each and every one of us can live with dignity.
There's no doubt in my mind that this democracy is strong, but there is also no doubt that it is not guaranteed.
Its future is not guaranteed.
And therefore, what I write about in my book is our common commitment that we must have to doing the work.
