Darren Walker is a complicated piece of work who feels that his country is speaking to him right now in a need for desperate life support.

And I want to do all I can.

My book is a love letter to America.

Reflecting my unwavering and profound gratitude for being born in this country at a time when poor little black boys and girls were given the license to dream and to believe that our dreams could come true.

I knew that.

that I would have a better future and that that little shotgun house on that dirt road in Ames, Texas was not my future.

And America made that possible in spite of any of the obstacles that were absolutely in my way.

I was in the first class of Head Start.

I went to good public schools in rural America.

Yes, they left a lot of things out.

I made up for that in college.

But I had that Pell Grant.

I had the scholarships.
