Um I had a b a bursary which most people got just sort by being basically in the in the sixth form, uh, which helped with living expenses.
Uh
So it was could hardly be more different to the dif the experience that students have today.
I I was also helped because in my first year I applied for a uh
uh a special scholarship that Wellington Newspapers uh was offering.
Uh and um I applied for the scholarship and got it, which uh was at I forget the number, but it was was quite generous and and part of the deal was you had to go and work for them.
uh in the holidays.
Uh and so I was thinking vaguely at the time of being a journalist, but uh in between getting the scholarship and the holidays we had a demonstration outside the newspaper's headquarters which turned
turned into a bit of a ruckus.
Yeah.
And uh they decided that they didn't they preferred me outside the building than inside.
They couldn't get out of the scholarship, so I never had to fulfill my side of the bargain.
It was quite a handy handy start.
And you're talking about being radicalised, what what do you mean?
Well, it was a very political environment at the time, you know, the uh anti apartheid, anti Vietnam war uh issues were very uh prominent and and students around the world were very prominent in those.
So it was a very uh uh active political environment uh to be in.
Again, quite different.
uh to today the uh there wasn't the pressure in those days to have assignments in uh so much.
So it was a much more uh free thinking kind of uh period of time at at at universities.
You know, if you had an active brain, uh you were likely to get involved with it.
