I couldn't see anything.
It was pitch dark.
It was also eerily quiet.
There was no traffic.
There was no noise at all.
Once in a while, a barking dog somewhere in the distance.
But that was it.
So it was eerie quiet, eerie dark.
And I'm going down this road I've never been on before, trying to find my way to Irwin.
So I'm marching along, and there are bears in this area, coyotes, raccoons, who knows what.
So I found a branch.
It was a pine branch.
It was an old pine branch that had lots of sharp, pointed, smaller branches sticking out from it.
And I thought, I'm going to carry this for protection if I need it.
About a mile or so in, a car was coming in my direction.
It turns out it was the incident commander back at the end of the off ramp who had told me to go back to my car and spend the night there.
He stopped and rolled his window down.
He said, so you decided to go anyway.
I said, yes, sir, I did.
Not knowing, you know, if there was going to be sudden consequences here.
