Still, West Germany is probably the most pro-European country in Europe.
The reason being, any time you go to Germany, if you have German friends, if you've tried to learn the language, if you've spent any time there, there's two major dilemmas in Germany.
One is Europeans don't want Germans to lead on a fundamental cultural and historical basis, right?
And the other one is we like the Germans paying the bills, but we don't like them cracking the whip.
But number two, since the Second World War, Germany is afraid of itself.
It's that idea that Willy Brandt said, we are an economic giant and a political pygmy.
And even since...
unification in 1990, which people should really remember nobody voted on.
This is the interesting thing.
The Germans didn't vote on unification.
There was no plebiscite.
There was never a referendum.
It happened because Helmut Kohl drove it through.
Now, it was kind of inevitable, but it wasn't necessarily something that was democratically elected by the Germans.
