They had to actually hermetically seal the country.

What I'm saying is that these are very different people.
They are, in a way, divided by a common language.
So the fact that they all speak German, we would think, ah, that's the unifying force.
But they all speak Hochdeutsch.
And many of these people have a Plattdeutsch vernacular, which is really, really quite different.
That's the first thing.

So Hochdeutsch is the sort of Deutsch that you'd learn in school.
So the German I learned when I was learning German is Hochdeutsch.
It's called High German.
And what it is, it's a standardization of German, which came in under Bismarck to try and codify Germany.
