But...
After the Second World War, every effort was made to jaundice bias policy towards German industrial might.
And that is the beginning of what they call the Wirtschaftswende, this huge German expansion, right?
It was hoped that that would happen after unification.
The idea was that we'll do the same thing, and in effect, East Germany will blossom, as Helmut Kohl said.
But it didn't.
And in actual fact...
East Germany has remained a net recipient of West German money ever since.
It's never been able to pay for itself.
But to come back, part of all that, John, was anchoring West Germany to this thing called the European Coal and Steel Community, which is 1957.
Then the European Economic Community, which was 1973.
And then the European Union, which was the product of the 1990s.
And fundamental to that was that Germany would lead.
but without being leader, would pay the bills.
Now, what the AFD are saying is, you know what?
Germany no longer needs the EU.
Germany can go it alone.
Germany needs to look after itself.
And this is, I think, for me, the biggest consequence of what is happening.
