And I said, dad, you know, I really don't know I can face to go to work with all these children.

You know, I've been in the jungle for three and a half years.

I'm 23 and a half.

I'd run two and a half thousand men as a number two.

I'd had real responsibility and excitement.

Did I want to go to work with children who, you know, had never been through things like that in my own mind?

And dad said something profoundly.

He said, if you understand money and how money flows around the world, you'll understand the world.

Now, that was the most prophetic thing, because as I went through price behavioral studies, neglecting fundamental economics, because I didn't think it was very predictive, by the time I got to 9-11, another train of study in my life, which had been the study of conflict,

And I, you know, popped out of poor mum's womb with the idea that conflict shaped the history of humanity.

Now, maybe that was because of my family had been involved in a sequence of wars to do with the British Empire.

But whatever it was, it was a fundamentally held view.

I was fascinated by conflict, fascinated by weapons, the way we thought about it, who won, why they won.

And I studied every conflict I could find.

And in detail, in a way that most people perhaps don't, looking for patterns to understand it.

But when 9-11 came along, suddenly my profession of finance and my study of conflict came together.

It's a simple question.

Was that an accident or a fundamental failure of the American immune system, the portent decline of the American system?

And we're looking at a time when the neoconservatives believed that ended history and America was going to dominate for 100 years.

So it's a completely different thought train from the one of those around me.
