At work, I think this is especially a problem.
So Annabel Roberts had also looked at situations like where someone's been given this kind of promotion or they've got this new placement that they really wanted to achieve.
And they might have been competing with some of their colleagues.
But by not just being upfront with those colleagues, it's a real issue.
Like people don't really want to collaborate with that person in the future because they don't see them as being this trustworthy person.
So it's really important for us to actually just be honest and open when we have achieved something that we're proud of.
But there are some rules in which you can do that more effectively.
And one of those is try not to engage in social comparison with others when you're
discussing your achievement.
So for example, if you are talking about getting that promotion, don't start downplaying all of the people who had competed against you and start dissing them or boasting about just how much better you were than that competition.
That suggests you're really concerned with the social hierarchy.
And people don't like that because they assume if you're judging others harshly, you might also be judging them harshly.
And it doesn't make you seem like a very attractive person to be around.
It's very common, you know, we see it in like Oscar speeches, you see it in Twitter or Facebook or LinkedIn all the time where people will talk about their success but they'll hide it within a complaint.
So it could be like, I'm just so exhausted with always being considered for leadership positions.
Now what the research showed, it doesn't work.
Like people aren't fooled by the humble brag at all.
So you still seem like you're a real show off.
All it does is actually make you seem less sincere because it's so obvious you're trying to manipulate people's impressions of you.
Now, the real irony here is that when we humble brag, it doesn't even really paint us as being a very competent person.
