There was no purity movement.
we have to make it like kind of almost translatable.
And what I found is that there are components of the purity movement that did exist within the black church over a period of time and still kind of exists.
So it wasn't like a big shift to an emphasis on purity.
There's always the same emphasis when it comes to sexuality or anything like that, but no big cultural move towards purity that died off that didn't happen in the black church.

No, I mean, I'm thinking about being in youth groups sometimes.
And I mean, I can count on one hand remembering talking about sex.
And when a conversation about sex came up, the guys were over there, the girls were over there.
And I remember it always feeling not only uncomfortable, but almost shaming as if it was our responsibility as women to keep the boys that we date in check.
There's another component when I think about what would probably be an important component to the conversation in the black community is how demonized sexuality can be sometimes.
So I remember when I was brave enough to talk about some of my sexual struggles with someone in the church, they attempted to cast a demon out of me.
Wow.
Laying hands.
And then when nothing happened, because I'm standing there like there is there's no demon in me.
Wow.
That's not checked, you know.
But when nothing happened, it was, you know, some of these come out with prayer and fasting.
And so I'm like, well, I need to pray and fast then.
Maybe that maybe there is something happening here.
