What messages about sexuality and body image are introduced at the start of the episode?

Dr. Juli 0:00
If you've been listening to Job With Julie for a while, have you noticed that there aren't any ads here? Well, that's intentional because we want this podcast to feel like a safe place for conversations about God and sexuality. At Authentic Intimacy, we hear every day how much these conversations matter. And if this podcast has encouraged you, challenged you, or helped you feel just a little less alone, would you consider becoming a monthly donor? Your partnership helps us reach more people with truth, hope, and healing, and I would love to have you as part of our team. As a way to say thank you, I'm going to send you a copy of my new updated book, 25 Questions You're Afraid to Ask About Love, Sex, and Intimacy.

This is Julie Slattery, and this podcast is an outreach of Authentic Intimacy, which is a ministry that's dedicated to helping you make sense of God and sexuality. Well, today's conversation is one that I've wanted to bring back for a while because it's frankly a lot of fun and it speaks into something that I think a lot of us are learning to navigate well. How does our understanding of sexuality and our bodies, how is it shaped not just by scripture, but also by the unique cultures that we've grown up in? I'm joined by two really delightful, wise, and honest women, Dawn Jones and Denisa Suarez.
Dr. Juli 1:38
They are both trained therapists, ministry leaders, and women who bring a lot of deep insight from their own cultural experiences. You're going to hear us talk about how messages around sexuality differ from different communities like white, black, Latino cultures, and particularly the interplay of that within the church. You're going to hear Don talk about how purity culture or the purity movement didn't exactly impact the black church in the same way that it did a lot of the white evangelical culture. And Denisa opens up very honestly about the intense pressure around appearance that a lot of Latino women feel. But in this conversation, we're going to go deeper than just talking about culture.
Dr. Juli 2:20
We're going to wrestle with some questions like what happens when women are both sexualized and silenced? Why do so many women carry shame for things that have been done to them? And how do conflicting messages from culture and family and church leave us confused about our bodies, our worth, and our sexuality? I learned a lot from this conversation, and I think you will too. So sit back and listen to the conversation that I had with Dawn Jones and Denisa Suarez. What a joy it is to be with two friends who are very like-minded. And Denise and Dawn, this is the first time you've ever met, right? Yes.
Dawn Jones 3:02
It's been wonderful so far.
Dr. Juli 3:06
Yeah, it's been wonderful. Tell me.
Dawn Jones 3:09
I mean, we're both like pretty fiery, not just for the Lord, but I think in personality. And so that just was wonderful. And I think we picked that up just by looking at each other. One small exchange, just like... We understand each other.
Danisa Suarez 3:23
It was crazy. I love it. We were looking over some things, and I made a comment that she immediately, like, yes.
Dr. Juli 3:34
Yeah, caught on to it. Yeah, this is a dynamo here, right? Having you two on the Job With Julie podcast. You've both been guests before, but to have you together is quite a treat. And first, I'd love to talk about what we have in common. So all three of us have this passion for speaking biblical truth into areas and questions around sexuality, particularly for women. When we talk about sexual wholeness, sexual brokenness, Do you feel like there's certain things that are greater than culture? In other words, we can talk about what's happening today in our day and age in Western culture. We can talk about the American church. Are there themes that you've seen in your lives and in your ministry that is just humanity?
Dr. Juli 4:19
It's not necessarily culture related to sexuality.
Danisa Suarez 4:23
Yes, people wanting freedom, wanting to be them.
