Fixed income is another term for bonds.
And now I know because when I transitioned from the government to working in financial planning, I had to start explaining this to people.
People don't even know what bonds are.
A bond is basically a loan.
So if you have a company like Coca-Cola who needs money in order to build a new bottling factory somewhere in the world, probably the Far East, maybe Africa, because that's where the labor costs are the lowest and they might not have penetrated the market.
So they need money in order to finance that project.
And this is what I was doing.
I was helping companies and I was doing something in the derivative products line called currency swaps and interest rate swaps.
We don't need to go that geeky here, but I was helping companies to borrow money.
And that was what my forte was at the time.
So I didn't understand stocks or equities.
Those are the same names in the United Kingdom.
They call them shares and that's very different.
And so I knew that if I could help companies borrow money,
by issuing bonds, but stocks are an ownership interest in a company.
So if I own stock in Coca-Cola, I basically own a brick somewhere, like in some bottling factory or a window somewhere, right?
Or maybe I own a tire in one of their, you know, cars that sort of trucks as trims.
transporting, you know, to the supermarkets.
So I'm an owner and that's a very big difference.
And your expected return on a bond versus a stock for the same exact company is going to be different.
