So you can do your research, you can walk right into a world, you can feel it, you can taste it.

And then you can leave your research, you know, aside and go into that imaginative space.

But of course, I have to write characters that I don't necessarily, you know, agree with or like.

I think even the most heinous of people have something to tell us.

So I think that you can write somebody who's got appalling views.

But if you can crack open what is the hurt or what is the sore or what is the moment or what is the incident in that part, the wound in that person's life or demeanour, that then you can find a way in to that mentality.

And then by kind of presenting it or knocking it up against resistance or whatever in the world of a play, you can kind of maybe reach out to other people who share the same views.

But when they see a certain part of themselves, you might change their hearts and minds.

Because I was utterly, you know, I grew up on theatre and it framed my whole attitude to life.

Oh, absolutely.

And in my day, it was so male dominated, you know, I didn't I always wanted to be an actress.

And I do remember the first moment it was my mother was a big theatre goer.

So she went to everything, Abbey, Gate, Project, Focus.

But also there was a great amateur drama scene and there was a pub called The Beavers in Step Aside.

I think it was, or still Oregon, anyway, up the road from us.

And it was, she brought me to see a play when I was about seven or eight there.

It was Maura Laverty's Talca Row.

And I just remember sitting in the chair and it's set in a council estate and it's a kind of a family drama and I was lost in it.

And I literally kind of walked out the door holding her hand going, that's what I want to be.

That's what I want to be.
