No, I'm afraid to say we're not surprised.
I mean, the indications for some time now were that we were approaching this point where basically we'd get to a stage where the numbers joining would pretty much peter out and we'd level off.
We're pretty much at that point now.
And I think the real risk
for the market is because we've more increases coming through from October.
And in fact, anybody renewing from November onwards, there's actually two increases coming their way.
And those cumulative increases could be anything from 10 to 15%, depending on the plan.
So the real concern for the market now is that if a lot of people who are barely affording their health insurance, when they get their next renewal, as we approach the peak renewal period, we think a lot of people, particularly younger members,
may have no option.
I mean, a lot of them have already had to reduce their cover down, but there is a real risk that a lot of them now might start exiting the market.
We did see this before this trend where after multiple price increases, what we saw was a lot of younger members exiting the market.
And Claire, it's just bad for a community rated market.
To keep it stable, you need a steady influx of younger members who basically will subsidize the older members.
So, you know, we won't really know for maybe another six to nine months, but as like about one and a quarter million people will renew their cover from November right through to the end of February.
And there is a real risk now.
And this is what this data is telling us.
that a lot of people, in terms of their affordability, they're pretty much, as you said, at tipping point.
And these latest round of price increases may just start now to force those younger members to exit the market.
So the market could start to contract.
