I felt there was a connection and indeed I felt and probably still do that gardening is the most creative of all the arts because you're dealing with plants, with nature, with soil, with climate.
And on these islands, our climate is fantastic, if you want to be a guy.
So I'd win the gold medals, wasn't able to do what I wanted to do.
And a woman called Fionnuala Reid passed.
I was in the RDS in Dublin at the Spring Show Garden Competition.
We had moved a ruined cottage from Achill in Mayo into the RDS, planted it up with wildflowers and she looked at it and she said to her friend, that's almost Chelsea standard.
And that set her, I did not really know what the Chelsea flower show was at that stage.
But that was a visceral moment for me.
And I said, I'm going to find out what she means by this.
She wasn't talking to me.
I knew her, but she wasn't talking to me.
So I went back to the flat I was living in and I looked at the golden pages trying to find this thing.
No, it was free.
Of course there wasn't, yeah, free.
You know, nothing was... It's not like now.
No, no.
And eventually, of course, there was no such thing.
So eventually I got the boat and the train over to London.
I found the address of the Royal Horticultural Society within a few months and I knocked on their door.
And that's how that journey started.
