The people who are in the grip of this, look at those who are above them, who are ahead of them, who have more wealth or more opportunities, or they've got privilege.

And privilege is turned into a sin.

Well, a Christian thinks of privilege as the Christians have a name for privilege, and it's called blessings.

And so what the communist wants to do is he wants to rename our blessings given to us by God and turn them into privileges, which are then regarded as insulting sins to people who don't have them.

Like as though I'm wronging somebody by being two inches taller than they are.

Or if I'm wronging somebody by having more money than they do.

So the envy is the driving force.

They would rather be in abject poverty with a flattened level playing field than to have inequity in a prosperous society.

So here's the illustration I use that highlights this envy.

If you had a magic button in front of you and you push that magic button,

And every poor person in your town overnight would be two times better off in real standard of living.

Two cars instead of one car, more square footage in his house, a nicer house.

He's two times better off in real terms because of the magic button.

And somebody would look at you with squinty eyes and say, okay, what's the catch?

And I'd say, well, the catch is when you push that button, all the rich people in your town will be 10 times better off.

That's the catch.

Now, when you push that button, if you would hesitate at all to push that button, then envy has you by the throat.

Because what you've done, when you push the button, you've increased wealth inequality.

So if wealth inequality is a problem, you've made the problem worse.

But what you actually did was made everybody in town a whole lot better off than they were before.
