I always note like the big three, right?
It's the flight, it's the where you're staying, and then it's what you're going to be eating.
And I set a budget around what I'm going to be eating.
And maybe what I'll plan is if I've got a five-night trip, I'm going to plan two nice dinners.
Can't really spend the kind of money where I'm going to do five, but I'm going to then look for the local stuff.
So I sort of set a framework for how I'm going to spend.
And in those situations, it really sets me up for success.
And like I said earlier, I prioritize.
There are times where it makes more sense for me to drop a little bit more money on my flight because if I'm flying five or six hours and I want a little bit of room for my feet and I want a little bit of ability to get on that plane earlier because I want that overhead bin and I want to be in group two so I can get that overhead space, I'll spend a little money for the convenience of making that anxiety go away.
So I think the budget for me happens by priority, but those are the strategies.
If you fail to plan, you're going to spend a lot more money than you think.
And look at your credit card online site every day and say, okay, look at where you spent.
Are any of these expenditures unexpected?
Okay, wait a second.
I may need to shift for tomorrow.
Maybe we're going to have leftovers for lunch, or we're going to have brunch tomorrow and skip a breakfast, lunch, and dinner out.
And those kind of things, just if you're tracking, if you know you can slow down your spending if you're paying attention.
If you want to come away from a vacation having enjoyed it and not paying a price that you can't travel again because you've messed up your finances, I think that's the best outcome here.
You don't want to come back from a great vacation with a lot of financial regret.
And I think that is something that a lot of us as a spend-first culture really have to navigate.
