In your home environment, there hasn't been any physical abuse, but everything else is leading to a concern around health and safety in a way that jeopardizes their life.

And it is time to take action.

Who else can help you?

And when the answer is nobody else can help me, is there someone else we can take this child to and they can just stay there while you get the help you need?

No, there's nobody else available in that family system.

That's when you go to court.

That's when someone is taking this child into another home.

So the threshold is that there's an immediate danger, imminent threat to the child's survival, life, being able to be okay for the next few days.

The bar is so high that when I would either meet children in my clinical practice days or when I was

more involved on a health system side when kids would be admitted into the hospital.

Either way, I was always struck by how long we had waited before we intervened.

And each state is different.

So I can only speak for Texas and really North Texas.

The amount of effort and support and patience and hope that we will spend, it's longer than I would feel comfortable if I was in that position to make that decision.

So when we see them clinically,

you can see the harm on their physical health, their emotional health, their mental health, their developmental health.

And the harms that have already happened from neglect take a while to recover from.

Some of that recovery you can see in a few weeks of being in a safe, nurturing environment.

Some of those recoveries take months.

Some of them go up and down, and sometimes it takes years.
