Right.

And some kids are teething and some kids will be naturally gnawing on things because they're exploring with their mouths.

And then that kind of segues into, oh, I took a bite out of somebody.

Oh, and that got some attention.

So the point is, biting is not malicious.

It is a form of communication.

And if you use it, if you allow it to be a form of communication and it gets them what they want, they continue to do it.

We want to shut down behaviors we don't want to see by not giving them what they're looking for.

And we want to encourage behaviors we do want to see.

Great question.

If your kid bites your shoulder, I would try not to respond or at least lick your wounds somewhere else.

And you can say very briefly, no biting.

But it's not a time to have a conversation or a lecture because guess what?

That's attention.

And you just gave them what they were looking for was attention.

Yes.

For the same reasons as biting, kids use their bodies to communicate.

And if they're frustrated, they may actually lash out.
