And then deciding to travel the world to uh Italy, India, and to Indonesia.
And that was eat pray love, eating in Italy, praying in India, and uh finding uh new love, um, romantic love in Indonesia and Bali, a very romantic place.
Um, but because in each of these relationships she was she was entering into, she was directly seeking happiness.
She wanted to be like having those butterflies that you first often have when you meet someone.
Um romantically.
Um, she wanted that butterfly experience over and over again, but of course she couldn't get it.
And so she was ending up at a certain point unhappy in her relationships and and divorcing first her first husband, then her second husband, et cetera, et cetera.
So I I do wanna be careful in kind of basically saying what I'm actually saying is that
Generally, not always, but generally when you try to be a good spouse, a good parent, you tend to be a happier person.
I'm not saying you should kind of directly seek happiness in marriage.
I'm just saying that marriage and family life
generally, but not always, tend to engender more happiness among Americans than does singleness.
But I also obviously need to need to acknowledge that for many of us, and I've been married thirty years,
There are days when you're unhappy, there are weeks when you're unhappy, there are months when you're unhappy, and there's even maybe years in your marriage when you're unhappy.
And we've certainly had spells of, you know, marital disappointment and conflict in our marriage in the last thirty years.
And I talk about that in my book.
But I'm just sort of saying from the thirty thousand foot level.
We are seeing a market decline in happiness in America at the population level, at the societal level.
And there's, you know, good evidence from this economist at Chicago that the number one factor accounting for this declining happiness is the fact that fewer Americans are in the state of marriage, which again, generally but not always, tends to foster a greater sense of meaning and happiness in people's lives.
And also af after you have the first child there's there's a dip in marital quality as well.
