We can broaden our understanding of care to include sort of traditional masculinity and celebrate how important that is for society.

I think it depends.

I think it depends on what the context is and what is adaptive for a particular family.

Because I think there are cultures in which having dads who aren't hands-on makes sense for the local demands because you have other caregivers or because dads are needed to do some kind of very specialized labor.

I think in contemporary societies where we expect a fairly high level of involvement from most fathers,

I would frame it as a missed opportunity.

Yeah.

I love that.

And I think we do find that sense of meaning and purpose, which is so important for our well-being, our sense of connectedness, our sense of coherence, like he just talked about, like feeling like you have a reason to do what you do every day and that life is happening according to plan.

That is so important for psychological health.

So are you working on it?

Yeah, so I think it is true in some cases, and it's unfair to dads in many other cases.

So in 1960, you had 88% of kids living with a father at home.

That dipped down in 2005 to 67% of kids, and it's actually rebounded.

So today, about 76% of kids in the U.S.
