They would not be economically adaptive.

But you see other models.

Even within Africa, I talk about another society, the Kipsigas, which is a day's drive away, where there are strict prohibitions against men picking babies up in the first year after birth.

So you'd never see a man carrying a baby outside his own home.

Why?

They're not supposed to share a sleeping surface with babies because it's considered that the manliness of the father will disrupt the infant's rearing and that the infant will compromise the father's masculinity.

And this is something I talk about a lot in my book.

There's so much societal and cultural variability around fatherhood.

Yeah.

So it's very different.

It's much more risky.

It's more hazardous.

It's slash and burn forestry.

And so it makes sense, just as in the Akka, it makes sense not to specialize too strictly.

It makes sense in the Kipsigis that dads are going to do most of the economic work and moms are going to do most of the caretaking.

And to be clear, dads are very involved with older kids.

They'll teach them how to hunt.

They'll teach them how to provision.

But they are not picking babies up.

Yeah.
