About half of the mothers did and about half of the mothers or rather about half of the women remained non-mothers.

And they found that the brain changed even during pregnancy.

So we didn't have the opportunity to do that because I was recruiting couples who were already willing to come into the lab pregnant.

And I wanted mothers and fathers to participate together.

But I think we might have seen some different patterns if we'd started the study earlier.

A lot.

So we see hormone changes.

We see new emotional worries and concerns.

We see couple relationship changes.

Even sleep disruption starts early before the baby's born.

And we don't know exactly the time course of brain remodeling because, like I said, my scan study started in mid-pregnancy.

We don't have other sources of information for the most part.

And so we're making our best guess.

My hunch is that what is reorganizing the brain more than anything else is parenting experience and the way in which that challenges the brain and the social demands that it places on the brain.

So my guess is that when we're looking at fathers, we're going to see most of the change happening after birth.

But we don't know that for sure.

We need to replicate these studies and extend them.
