I think you mentioned BDNF, lactate.
I don't think you mentioned tumor necrosis factor alpha or irisin.
But you did, I think, mention a third one.
But nonetheless, these are chemicals that are made when our muscles are active.
And frankly, the bigger our muscles, the more of these chemicals are produced.
We'll talk about that in just a moment.
But these chemicals make their way throughout the body and do good things.
Some of them make their way through the blood-brain barrier and do good things in the brain, like irisin that goes into the brain and then allows the brain to produce this BDNF, brain-derived neurotrophic factor.
That's miracle grow.
It enhances the growth of new brain cells.
Who's not going to want that?
It nurtures our synapses.
So we want more and more of that.
Interleukin-6 produced by muscle cells when they are active actually is one of the reasons it works like metformin.
It stimulates the AMP, I don't mean to be too technical, but something called the AMP kinase pathway for those of your viewers who like this kind of stuff.
and basically helps us lower our blood sugar, improves mitochondrial function, and allows us to burn fat.
That's how exercise helps us burn fat.
It's not just a calorie thing.
It actually shifts our metabolism away from just burning glucose and breaking down glycogen to make that glucose, but it allows us really to be more involved in burning fat.
So in a very real sense, this is like taking the drug metformin.
