And so one of the things that I looked at in my PhD dissertation work was this concept of familiarity and what exactly is it and how do you measure?

And then I also looked at team level aggregate characteristics.

Is it a novice team?

Is it an experienced team?

The characteristics of...

fellowship training, certification, how do these things build together to show the performance in relation to patient outcomes?

And so I developed a novel tool to measure familiarity

And it looked at rudimentary data of how many times basically have people worked together over the course of a year.

It was extraordinary the amount of data that I had to go through in order to develop these measures and do the calculations.

What I found in working with my committee was that it was not validated that familiarity was the most important thing.

Now, there were some relationships between certain individuals and how many times they worked together.

Total team familiarity didn't matter at all.

Yes.

But there were some components or individuals, for instance, a surgeon and anesthesiologist, how many times their level of familiarity was important.

The circulating nurse and surgeon and a triad of the surgical tech surgeon and circulating nurse.

Those were the degrees of relay familiarity that had some relationship to patient outcomes.

We looked at the outcomes of cost, of effectiveness, as far as length of procedure compared to what was expected, and even tied it to, for inpatients, length of stay in the hospital.

And so started to see some relationships, not strong, but some relationships between that familiarity.

And then also looked at the characteristics of their team level experience and saw a little bit stronger relationship between experienced teams, even though they weren't familiar with each other.
