And so one of the things that I took from that with my dissertation committee was that it is less likely

that the number of times that I have worked with someone is the most important characteristic.

It is our level of experience overall within this specialty that tends to bring more value to the patient outcomes.

And I also believe, which I did not test this in my dissertation, but it's further work that needs to be done.

It's the combination of that level of experience and the use of team-based tools.

And so I relate that to the airline industry.

So many times we look at the O.R.

and air safety as similar in there.

We compare them and I would say they are an awful lot alike.

And if you look at if you've ever been on a plane recently and you walk in, it is not uncommon.

for either a flight attendant or one of the pilots to be introducing themselves to each other.

They've never met.

But yet, to me, that is testimony to they don't rely on the fact that this flight's going to go well because we know each other.

They rely on the fact that this flight's going to go well because we know the tools that we have

And we have the competency based off of those tools.

And that gives us confidence in how well this outcome is going to be.

So when I translate that to the operating room,

I look at what AORN does.

Our premise is around providing evidence-based practice resources to the perioperative setting.

What that does is it helps the individuals in and around the operating room build their confidence
