Does vitamin D have an upper limit?
And so the upper limits haven't been studied very well, but the concept was that for every nutrient, there's sort of a safe range.
There's an acceptable range in there.
Of vitamin, mineral, amino acids, protein in general, carbohydrates, which I wanted to get to because people are so enamored with the RDA for protein, and they ignore the fact that there may be an acceptable macronutrient distribution range, but there's also an RDA for carbohydrates, which is set at
130 grams per day, and yet the dietary guidelines say that everyone should eat between 45% and 65%, which is two to three times the RDA, with no justification.
There's no science to justify it.
There's no statement to justify it.
So they totally ignore the RDA in that case, and yet are absolutely wedded to the RDA on protein.
Why do you think that... Do you have speculations as to how that... I have lots of speculations on that.
Without four or five letter words?
Certainly the individuals who prefer a more vegetarian diet don't like guidelines that require more protein because that requires a lot more skill and thinking to do.
And also if you're going to perpetuate an idea about saturated fat,
then you can demonize food.
So you're better off with a low protein intake.
So both of those, when you go to higher protein intakes and you utilize animal protein as part of it, both the total protein is challenged and the saturated fat become challenged.
And there's a lot of people with a lot of invested interest in maintaining those two concepts.
And then as you break out the National Academy of Science, is that right, which then informs the... So they provide the numbers, and as Heather was saying earlier, then the dietary guidelines are supposedly the consumer-facing food interpretation of those guidelines.
How do we put this into practice for...
I think it's just really to reflect that.
What is a safe range that from anything that we know?
